Chapter 8

Contretemps

The request could wait one more day. Waiting till tomorrow gave him more time to think about it; to imagine this. He didn’t think he would be able to do this alone though. Would Augere be willing to actually assist with this? He might need to have Genier’s help instead, or maybe ask Genier to get someone to assist him with this. But that was probably going to be the only obstacle.

Jason entered the library at the appointed meeting hour on Thursday, knowing no meeting had been scheduled. He found Augere sitting at his desk with a pile of mail in front of him. At a glance Jason noted several magazines, catalogs, probably bills, and a few packages. As if the mail had been left to accumulate a while. Augere did not look up as Jason walked in, which gave Jason a chance to take in the sight of him. And it never gets old, Jason thought. Just the shock of seeing him. Just like Ground Hog day for me—as if I am seeing him for the very first time, each time, and he still takes my breath away, always. This immortal being. Vampire. Right here, every day. Well, when I do actually get to see him that is.

There were subtle things about Augere that Jason picked up on now, things more easily discerned after being around him for nearly a year. One of these things was that earthy green, pleasantly exotic scent; an essence hard to define but which seemed like a natural fragrance signature, one only faintly and delicately detected now and then about him. Whether naturally occurring or a fragrance Augere wore, Jason now associated the scent only with him.

Augere looked up and barely gave him a glance. Jason stood silent at the desk instead of taking his usual seat, as Augere continued to occupy himself with his mail.

“Are we having a meeting?” Jason asked.

“Is there need for one.” Augere’s tone was flat and he made no eye contact.

Augere removed several envelopes that appeared to be bills and placed them in one of the drawers in his desk.

Jason continued standing patiently. He didn’t imagine this would take long, even though he always wanted to linger in Augere’s presence. They had at least moved past the point where any pretense was needed to share each other’s company in this room—no book as prop or excuse seemed required now.

Jason noticed several interesting looking catalogs among Augere’s mail. He always seems to find the coolest things. These looked like some Jason wouldn’t mind browsing himself. Even as uninvolved with the world as he often was, Augere always seemed to know where to find the things he liked.

Among the catalogs and other assorted mail scattered on the desk, Jason spotted a pink envelope that partially covered a beige one. Both looked as if addressed in a feminine hand. Jason eyed these with discreet curiosity: personal correspondence? From whom I wonder?

Augere leaned forward and casually placed two of the catalogs so that they covered the two hand written envelopes.
